Carpet Moths
Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 5:00PM Taking good care of your carpets means a lot of thing. How to clean a carpet, how to vacuum, the effects of sunlight, managing wear patterns, and knowing about carpet moth damage. Actually, this topic is fairly simple and you need to keep in mind a few facts to be able to put your mind to rest.
The Facts
- It is the larva of the moth that actually chews on the carpet.
- The moth has a typical four stage insect life cycle of egg, larva, cocoon, adult.
- Signs of a possible infestation include actually seeing the moths in the house or on carpets, seeing larva, seeing small black, brown, tan specs or pellets which could be the larva's excrement, bald spots on the carpet. Sometimes the chewed area might be confined to a particulr color or yarn on your carpet, due to preferences of the larva.
- Regularly vacuuming the carpet, under the carpet, between carpet and pad, and under furniture helps greatly in controlling these insects.
- Hand control also works - catch and kill moths or larva.
Insecticides are dangerous in your home and not recommended. If the infestation is bad and beyond your control call an oriental carpet expert for advice on cleaning or fumigating your carpets. Some people use pure lavendar oil to repel insects - it works!
Also, before you store a rug consult with an oriental rug expert for tips on controlling insects during the storage.
So, there you have the basics. This problem is easy to control and a little knowledge goes a long way. Enjoy your rugs!

This site is interesting about the information regarding oriental rugs and carpets. As the blog writer (Diana) described about carpet moths which obviously damage carpet, some time carpet wool which has already damaged by carpet moths before weaving and use by weaver to make carpet of it, in this case carpet made by this wool is not very strong and some time this carpet again infected by moths very soon. So that my advice is to check or tell weaver to use clean wool before weaving, this is very important aspect for nice and healthy carpet.
Thanks for allowing me to send my ideas.

Carpet Moths also burrow deep inside the upholstery cushion of couches and sofas. They are very hard to exterminate. furniture repair nyc
Now THAT is good to know! I suppose that is a bigger problem in some climates more than others. Rug owners beware! Thanks for the added information!

These are some scary bugs. You must make sure to clean your rug to prevent these from multiplying.

Thanks for your post!
Yes, that is a good idea. Professional cleaning is good for rugs and can make them last longer. Everyone needs to find a cleaner who is expert in cleaning oriental rugs, visit their cleaning facility, and make sure there is a quality guarantee. Not a good idea to clean them yourself but, vacuuming regularly is a good front line defense.
